- ORIGIN OF RAFALE

Rafael is a French word meaning "gust of wind" or "burst of fire" and is a French-origin delta-winged, twin-engined multi-role fighter aircraft manufactured and designed by Dassault Aviation.

The first requirement of Rafael is for the new generation of fighters in the mid-1970s with both the French Air Force and Navy. Raphael's trial was started by the French government in 1991.

Construction of the first series of Rafale aircraft began in late 1992 but was suspended in 1995 due to political and financial uncertainty.

The production was restarted in 1997 after an initial order of 48 aircraft was placed by the Ministry Of Defence, followed by the further order of 59 Rafale in 2004 and 60 aircraft in 2009.
