What Is Centrifugal Clutch?

A centrifugal Clutch is a type of clutch that uses centrifugal force to connect two concentric shafts, with the driving shaft nested inside the driven shaft. In the fully centrifugal type of clutches, the springs are eliminated altogether and only the centrifugal force is used to apply the required pressure for keeping the clutch in the engaged position.

Parts of Centrifugal Clutch
- Shoes – Shoes can move radially outwards and are held in position by spring.
- Guide or Spider:- Hold the shoes and guide their movement.
- Springs – Springs are used to engage and disengaging the shoe with the drum by centrifugal force.
- Friction lining:- The friction lining is provided to the outer surface of the driving shoe.

Working of Centrifugal Clutch
It works on a straightforward principle. The driving member rotates on the movement of the engine crankshaft. When engine speed reaches the specified rpm it generates enough centrifugal force on the brake shoes.
It pushes the shoes outward of the center, which results in the connection of brake shoes to the friction lining of the driven member, it generates friction and transmits the power. When engine speed reaches the desired rpm clutch engages itself eliminating the need for manual operating linkage.
To reduce or Increase the engagement rpm of the clutch, the spring is replaced. To increase the engagement rpm stiff spring is used; while to decrease the engagement speed soft spring is used.
Advantages of Centrifugal Clutch
- It is low in price because of fewer components and simple construction.
- Easy to operate.
- It doesn’t require any separate control mechanism like clutch pedal etc.
- It requires less maintenance.
Disadvantages of Centrifugal Clutch
- Power transmission is limited due to slippage of shoes.
- It can not be used to transmit a high amount of torque.
- There will always be a power loss due to friction and slipping.
- Overheating problem due to quick engagement during running conditions.
